An ABBYY FineReader alternative for Mac

FineReader is a serious OCR engine with a long track record. If you're looking for something else on macOS, it's usually for one of three reasons: the price, the fact that the Mac edition trails the Windows one, or that you only ever needed a fraction of what it does.

What PaperFind is

PaperFind does the part most people actually bought FineReader for: turn scanned PDFs and images into searchable PDFs with an invisible text layer, then find any phrase across every document you've processed. That's the whole product. It is not a PDF editor, not a document-conversion suite, and not a comparison tool.

Where it differs

When FineReader is still the right answer

Straightforwardly: if you need heavy PDF editing, document comparison, conversion to Word and Excel with layout fidelity, extensive language coverage, or Windows support, FineReader does those things and PaperFind does not. ABBYY still sells and supports FineReader PDF for Mac. If your job is "OCR a pile of scans and be able to find things in them", PaperFind is built exactly for that and costs a lot less. If your job is broader, buy the bigger tool — it exists for a reason.

For accuracy: ABBYY's older FineReader Pro for Mac line reached end of life in 2021 and was replaced by FineReader PDF for Mac, which remains a current, supported product. We're not claiming otherwise — we're offering a smaller, cheaper tool for a narrower job.

Try it on your own scans

Free trial, no account. The fastest test is your messiest scan — if PaperFind can't read it, you've lost a download and nothing else.
